Every mother in the world wants her children to be happy, healthy and to live long, prosperous lives. The key to giving this to her children is good nutrition during the first 1,000 days of the baby's life - from pregnancy to age two. To meet this critical need, World Food Program (WFP) and its partners provide the right food at the right time along with health services to help break the cycle of hunger and poor health.
Malnutrition during the first 1,000 days of a child's life not only causes irreversible damage, but is responsible for 3.5 million children's deaths every year. WFP is able to provide tailored responses to the needs of mothers and children in different cultures by taking advantage of its existing food storage facilities, transportation systems and local relationships. It's not just about providing food, it's about providing the right food, at the right time.
WFP provides specialized food to pregnant women and young children to ensure that whole families reach their physical and mental potential. The food is highly-fortified with nutrients and ready to use. Examples of the foods distributed are Super Cereal Plus, Plumpy Sup and high energy biscuits.
In addition to providing nutritious food, WFP works to increase access to health services for mothers - starting with pregnancy and continuing through their children's early years. Mothers are given pre and post-natal care, including vitamins and iron supplements. They learn more effective ways to feed and care for their children and how to monitor their children's growth. Mothers and children are also vaccinated against preventable diseases.
