Fight Famine in the Horn of Africa

by World Food Program USA
Vetted

Summary

In the Horn of Africa a combination of drought, conflict, and lack of humanitarian access has left 4 million people suffering, in desperate need of help and hundreds of thousands could perish in the coming months unless humanitarian assistance is allowed to flow freely. We are collectively struggling to reach as many people as possible that are in need. However, in order to overcome the current situation, we need to try to scale-up general food distribution.

Challenge

The number of people now in need of food relief due to drought, conflict and high food prices in Somalia is approximately 4 million - or more than half of the country's population.

Solution

WFP is currently providing food assistance to nearly one million people in Somalia and will scale up its operations during coming months to reach some 1.9 million people in those parts of the country where we have access.

Long-Term Impact

World Food Program is working to feed the most vulnerable populations during this crisis, and to mobilize world attention and support to stave off future disasters. WFP will deliver life-saving assistance to about 1 million people in Mogadishu, central and northern Somalia.
