Fibras/Movimiento por Nicaragua (MpN) empowers citizens, regardless of their economic and education level, to take a stand for democracy in Nicaragua. By supporting this project you will help increase access to information through a national radio show, sms text campaigns, written materials and community forums. You will help young people become active and responsible citizens through leadership training. You will promote wide, public participation through demonstrations and marches.
Nicaragua held its first free elections in 1990 after decades of dictatorship and civil war. But liberty was short-lived with the resurgence in 2007 of an authoritarian style government whose tactics include the use of blackmail and fear to subordinate the population; control of most major mass media; disregard for the country's law; and corruption at all levels of government. Nicaraguans, when provided with information and an opportunity to act, stand up for their civil liberties.
With your support a national network of volunteers can participate on radio shows and independent media interviews; town hall meetings, debates and public demonstrations; and personal meetings with policymakers. Fibras/Movimiento por Nicaragua will also introduce the use of new technologies including SMS text to reach the most remote Nicaraguans (90% of Nicaraguans have a cell phone and access to SMS) and social networks to engage a new generation of concerned citizens.
Well informed, engaged and active citizens can make informed decisions, stand up in defense of their rights and require governments to be accountable for their actions. Fibras/Movement For Nicaragua gives all Nicaraguans, including those living abroad, an opportunity for equal voice, regardless of their economic and education level, and that is powerful enough to change the future of a Nation.
