Female Empowerment Project: Uganda Dormitory

by MAP International

MAP's Female Empowerment Project meets four of the eight Millennium Development Goals: Achieve Universal Primary Education, Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women, Improve Maternal Health and Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases. We will achieve these through a girls dormitory at the Lokiding Primary School in Uganda providing a safe environment for learning.

In the Lokiding community of Northeastern Uganda, 77% of school-aged girls do not attend primary school. Young woman face challenges at school once they reach puberty. It's estimated at 1-in-10 school aged African girls do not attend school during menstruation due to the lack of clean and private sanitation facilities in schools. This results in a high dropout rate of young woman after hitting puberty.

MAP's Female Empowerment Project will focus on the motivation and empowerment of 96 school girls in the Lokiding community to enroll and remain in schools by addressing hygiene and sanitation related issues and by providing a safe learning and living environment focused on education. This project will increase enrollment and retention rates of young women by 80% in the Lokiding Primary School.

Long-Term Impact

We will achieve this through education awareness campaigns, complete the construction of a girls dormitory to house 96 young women, installation of solar panels for consistent electricity and furnishing and equipping the dormitory with bedding facilities. Over time, this project will provide the young women in the Lokiding village with strength, education, health, safety and empower them to lead healthier happier lives.
