Cafeteria Project Underway

I have just returned from my trip to Bangladesh in December 2010. During my trip there, in addition to hosting a medical mission consisting of 22 medical students from Nova University, I had a chance to see the progress in a number of different ongoing projects.

Happily, the problems with providing food and meals for the staff of this rural hospital, and more importantly for the patients looks closer to being resolved. As I have stated before, hospitals in Bangladesh do not routinely provide meals, or even basic care such as changing sheets, offering nightgowns etc. This burden is left to the patients' families to take care of. A family member in hospital requires the help of several relatives to come to and fro from the hospital to take care of all daily meals and other necessities of the patient. This is a tremendous burden on the poor who cannot afford to take time away from their daily labors and simply cannot afford the travel costs to the hospital.

The food they bring for their loved ones is also not substantial, the usual low-nutrient high energy foods eaten at home. This makes the time in hospital a burden on the family and a struggle for the patient. At our hospital, a cafeteria has been set up providing nutritious, simple meals and snacks available for the patients and the staff. This is a rural hospital about a half hour drive away from the main town so hot meals are not available for the staff and patients. The burden on staff has also been lifted, especially for our night staff who would otherwise not venture out into the dark back to town for a meal.

The support from generous donors will help provide some of the meals for free to the very poor who are hospitalized. Others will have access to these low cost meals. Thank you for your past and continued support. Our mission is to ensure that the poor who are sick do not suffer from lack of food while in hospital.
