To address the constant threat of hunger, we will provide a consistent and reliable local source of nutritious fresh vegetables to 110 food-insecure households in South Africa. Because "charity begins at home," we will do more than just feeding people; we will empower 10 young people within these impoverished communities to embark on successful agricultural ventures to allow them to continuously donate food and hence promote long-term local food security and nutrition.
In certain regions of South Africa families are struggling to put food on the table. Despite the potential for local food production to offer economic opportunities, particularly for youth in a country with a youth unemployment rate of 46%, limited access to resources, inadequate training for skills development, and a lack of inputs and equipment, are hindering progress towards local food nutrition and security.
To feed 110 vulnerable households, we will equip 10 young people with access to productive resources including seeds, seedling trays, rubber bands, fertichem, fertilizers, hydromix, drip irrigation, water tanks, tank stands, and mini greenhouses, as well as training on good agricultural practices, to be able to produce nutritious vegetables. Some vegetables will be sold for income while others are donated to local households in need.
By using young people to grow food to donate to vulnerable households we are strengthening the bonds of community and reinforcing the African philosophy of "Ubuntu" which is rooted in the belief that our humanity is defined by our relationships with others and our willingness to share and support one another. Our project will not only enhance food security and nutrition but also inspire others to explore agriculture as a means to address hunger and poverty.
