Project #25844

Feed 20 Neglected Tuberculosis Victims in India

by Ganga

In 2014, there were 9.6 million cases of active TB which resulted in 1.5 million deaths. If left untreated, TB kills about half of those infected. Medication is issued by the Indian government, however most of the victims, being laborers or farmers, have no means of support while they are sick. The treatment often fails because the sufferer does not make a full recovery due to malnutrition. They either die or continue to spread the disease. This project aims to break this cycle.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics for 2015 give an estimated incidence figure of 2.2 million cases of TB for India. TB is airborne and therefore spreads easily. Victims and their families can be reluctant to ask for help until the disease is well established. Treatment can take months or even years, and those living in poverty may have little or no means of support while they are undergoing treatment. Due to lack of nutrition, the treatment fails or is abandoned.

Our solution to this part of the problem is simple: Get good healthy food and give it to those on TB medication who are not in a position to feed themselves properly. The names and locations of these people are accessible to our organization and we have the heart, the courage and the manpower to distribute the food.

Long-Term Impact

Every patient who sees the treatment through returns home healthy instead of spreading more disease. Successful treating one person has an exponential effect. Moreover, when we help others, we increase peoples awareness of their own potential for good. There is hope that someone will say "Why didn't I do that?" The battle with Tuberculosis in developing countries is ongoing and being fought on many fronts. If we do what we can see needs to be done, others will join the effort.
