A few months ago HDI welcomed 3 outstanding interns from GlobeMed at Lawrence University. They worked alongside HDI staff and community members to plant kitchen gardens to encourage nutritious eating and food security for some of the most vulnerable in Rwanda. Only a few months later and these crops are already sprouting and being consumed by our beneficiaries.
Recently, HDI staff went to visit and interview some community members about the status of their gardens. In Cyaruzinge, all 51 families have at least one kitchen garden to supplement their diet with healthy vegetables thanks to your support.
Gahunde has onions, green vegetables, and carrots in his kitchen garden. He told us that his family is eating more vegetables now. Since he now has so many vegetables, he is planning on selling his surplus at the market to make some extra money for his family.
Jeannette told us that thanks to her garden she no longer has the problem of trying to afford vegetables for her children to eat. In fact, they can now eat vegetables every day. She said that her family is happy for the support of the garden.
Uwimana told us that her 3 children enjoy eating the garden vegetables. When she has money, she likes to buy beans in order to mix them together with the vegetables in order to create balanced meals for her kids.
All of the families in Masoro also have gardens that were built for them by our GlobeMed interns. Etienne is a community member with a wife and 4 children. He grows onions, green vegetables, and carrots. He told us that he really appreciates the garden because it helps his kids to eat well every day, especially since it is difficult to purchase vegetables from the market due to poverty.
HDI thanks its generous sponsors for helping make the dream of healthy eating a reality for the community members of Cyaruzinge and Masoro. We hope to continue our beneficial relationship with GlobeMed next summer as well. We thank you for your support in making a real difference in the health and lives of the community of potters.
