Food to 10 moms in recovery & kids in Norwalk CT

by Liberation Programs, Inc.

Summary

This project will provide three meals a day for a year for ten pregnant or parenting women (and their children) in long-term inpatient treatment for addiction. We have a successful completion rate for people in treatment that is 18% above state average . FIRP is one of the most highly subsidized programs we offer. Almost two-thirds of the women served do not have benefits that will cover inpatient treatment for substance abuse and come into the program with little more than they can carry.

Challenge

In 2015, there were 723 deaths in Connecticut from accidental overdose; 415 involved heroin. The oldest victim was 72, youngest 18. Liberation Programs believes that was 723 too many. Our community is under threat from alcoholism and drug addiction. Only one person in ten is able to access evidence-based treatment. More than stigma - lack of financial resources is the number one obstacle to many obtaining treatment. Additionally, we are facing $800,000 in fed and state funding reductions.

Solution

This project will provide nourishing meals to the ten women in our long-term inpatient addiction treatment program, and their children. Approximately $140,000 needs to be raised in private support each year to provide scholarship services for these women as well as help pay for program supplies including basics such as food, sheets, towels, toiletries, and even diapers. This project will ensure that cuts in funding do not affect our ability to provide these basic necessities, especially food.

Long-Term Impact

Each woman and her counselor work together to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that includes major goals beyond addressing addiction and will improve the lives of their children and families. Women achieve and keep their personal goals regarding freedom from alcohol or any other substance abuse; regain custody of their children if separated from them and become healthier, delivering healthy babies; and improve their ability to live independently by connecting to resources in the community.
