As the reconstruction of Northern Uganda continues, healthcare remains a significant challenge -- both at the national as well as at local levels. Thousands of people are moving back home after years in internally displaced persons camps, creating immense pressure on an already fragile infrastructure.
A recent dispute between the National Health Ministry and the District Health offices resulted in massive delays in drug procurement for government run health centres. As a result, frustrated patients had to travel long distances to NGO run health centres like Punena Health Centre for drugs and treatment. During that time, our patient load rose by over one third, and our staff scrambled to meet the demand for drugs.
Over the last three months, the common illnesses diagnosed and treated were largely malaria (due to the rainy season) followed by diarrhea and intestinal related illnesses which are in most cases related to contaminated water sources.
It was just announced that ChildVoice's Punena Health Centre ranked #1 among all health centers in Gulu District by the Ministry of Health! This award was based on an assessment of cleanliness, number of patients served, duration staff keep the health centre open each day, managerial competency, and data management. Congratulations to the staff of the Punena Health Centre!!
We are so grateful for the timely and generous financial support that comes through the partnership between Global Giving and ChildVoice International. However, we are continuing to run behind budget due to the increased patient numbers. Please consider a gift today to help defray these increased costs.
