CURRENT PROGRESS OF THE PROJECT

October 2014 TO December, 2014

Children can be affected by a range of eye diseases that can lead to visual impairment in childhood or in later years of life. Many of these disease are preventable or treatable. Uncorrected refractive error is the most common eye disease and a leading cause of visual impairment in children. According to surveys conducted, around 4.6% school children in Pakistan suffer from visual impairment due to refractive errors. Such a high prevalence calls for strategies such as school vision programs on a large scale. In addition availability of trained human resource to perform quality refraction and ensuring availability of affordable spectacles is required. A refractive error is a very common eye disorder. It occurs when the eye cannot clearly focus the images from the outside world. The result of refractive errors is blurred vision which is sometimes so severe that it causes visual impairment including blindness.

The project team of Khyber Eye Foundation now visiting small villages of district charsadda where no medical facilities are available, during the period the project team visited 48 primary and middle school and screened out 25262 students. 328 teachers were trained as to how the vision testing of the students be carried out. Out off 25262 students 985 students were diagnosed as refractive errors and were issued spectacles free of cost.

The story of a girl who had refractive error and her life changed after visiting by the project team to her school.

Amina is a student of class 2nd and lives in a small village of charsadda and studying in government girls primary school Tarkha. Her father is a laborar and has a meager source of income and supporting 6 family members and has no other source of income. Amina used to complaint regarding her eye sight problem to her father, but her father could not afford to take her to doctor. The school eye health programme team visited on 12th November, 2014 to GGPS Tarkha and did screening of children and screened out Amina, when asked from her how she used to do her class work from green board, she replied that she used to sit close to green board and will do her work, before that she never visited any doctor for her eye checkup as her father could not afford it. Optometrist in a team carried out refraction, of Amina, before refraction her vision was 6/36 of both eyes, after refraction her vision came to 6/6 both eyes with -3.50 Ds both eyes, she was issued with glasses free of cost now she is a brilliant student of her class and easily read and write.

Khyber Eye Foundation request our donors to continue to support our project and donate maximum so that poor school going students are benefited and can be issued with glasses / medicine free of cost and also get a opportunity to lead healthy life.
