Current Progress of the Project

By Syed Khalid Mahmood | Administrator

Million of persons are living with severe sight loss in Pakistan, that can significantly impact their daily activities. Half of this population’s sight loss is avoidable.

• A sight test easily detects the early signs of eye conditions such as glaucoma, which can be treated soon.
• During any sight test, other health conditions including diabetes and high blood pressure can be detected.
• To maintain healthy eyes, you should eat well, avoid smoking and wear eye protection during bright sunlight.

The importance of eye sight towards the overall wellbeing, independence and quality of life of an individual is too important to be ignored. This is why eye care charities, health professionals and organizations are promoting the importance of eye health and need for regular tests.

In Pakistan, hundreds of people go blind every day, often from preventable causes like cataract. People in Western countries have ready access to cataract surgery, but in Pakistan most people don’t. In Pakistan most eye care services are only available in cities. Around two-thirds of the country’s population, and most people who are affected, live in remote areas without access to health services. Most people are unable to travel to get help – many simply can't afford the expense. Traditional women and children are particularly disadvantaged as they are not expected to travel alone.

Globally, it's estimated that four out of five people who are blind don't need to beEye conditions like cataract and diabetic retinopathy can cause sight loss and blindness even though they're treatable or preventable. An estimated 90 per cent of the world’s visually impaired people live in low-income countries. Disadvantaged and vulnerable communities are the worst affected because there's a strong link between eye health, poverty and education. Like wise, the children who live with their parents in remote areas also don’t have access to eye facilities, especially those school going children who are studying in a school of remote areas

Khyber eye Foundation is playing a very vital role in restoring the eye sight of school going children, conducting various seminar in remote areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to address various eye disease and its prevention especially for the children. The project of Khyber Eye Foundation during the period visited 81 schools and screened 2841 students, 809 teacher were trained to carry out vision of each student, and out off 2841 students 1721 students were diagnosed as refractive error and were issued spectacles free of cost worth of 2575$

Story of a girl student who had refractive error and how her life changed after she was issued spectacles by the Project Team

Nosheen belongs to a small village of charsada. she studies in government girls high school Prang. she is the student of 8th class. Her father is farmer and support 8 family members.  The school eye health team visited GGHS Prang and found a shy girl sitting in the class. When the optometrist asked her teacher about her daily work routine. She replied that she used to copy work from her class mate and she was not able to write from blackboard. The reason, her teacher gave about, not writing from board was that she is a special child with lack of mental abilities from normal student. After listening to her teacher’s complaints to optometrist carried out the checkup of Nosheen. The initial visual acuity was CF close in both eyes. Then retinoscopy was performed and found that she had a refractive error of -12.00 diaptors in both eyes. When a refractive error corrected and was issues glasses, her vision improved to 6/18 in both eyes and she was able to read and write from blackboard. Nosheen now has gained her confidence back and enjoys her study as a regular and normal student.
