CURRENT PROGRESS OF THE PROJECT

July 2014 TO September, 2014

The school vision screening program is based on the guidelines for school eye health for the eastern Mediterranean region (EMR) developed by the international agency for the prevention of blindness (EMR-IAPB) in collaboration with WHO and prevention of blindness union.

The goal of the project is to improve quality of life and education capabilities by eliminating blindness and visual disability particularly due to uncorrected refractive errors in school children.

The project encompasses the following activities

  • Mapping location of primary and secondary schools
  • Making contact with relevant bodies and authorities in education and health
  • Identifying teachers to be trained
  • Training teacher in vision testing
  • Vision screening in schools by trained teachers
  • Refraction in schools by trained teachers
  • Refraction in schools of those who fail vision test
  • Referral of children whose vision cannot be improved to the local eye unit, with provision of low vision care ofor those who need it.
  • Providing free of cost spectacles that are high quality, affordable and comfortable
  • Health education / awareness raising among the children and teacher about eye health and activities to prevent or treat locally endemic diseases e.g. face washing and the importance of a clean environment
  • Ensuring quality control procedures are in place
  • Establishing effective management including information management systems
  • Monitoring and evaluating the program

Khyber Eye Foundation since its start of project was able to screening 42632 children in 96 government primary, middle and high schools. A staggering 1870 (4.4%) children were provided refractive error correction through providing free of cost spectacles. 463 teacher were trained in vision testing whereas 307 children were referred to KEF for further treatment. So far the affected students have been issued glasses / medicines worth of US $ 43250/-

The story of a boy who had refractive error and his life changed after visiting by the project team to his school.

Sohrab sir is a student of Class 3rd and lives in a small village of charsadda. He is studying is government primary school Shaheedan. His father is a labourar and has a meager source of income and supporting 8 family members. The school Eye health Team visited government primary school Shaheedan and found during screening that Soharab sir has weak eye sight. He was asked as to how he note down work from black board, he replied that he note down from his friend’s note book. He couldn’t get his eye sight checked as his father could not afford it. Project team optometrist carried out refraction and found that his vision was 6/60 in right eye and CF 2 in left eye. After issuance of glasses to him, his vision came to 6/18 both eyes. Now after issuance of glasses, he can read from the black board and leading a very healthy life.

Khyber Eye Foundation request our donors to continue to support our project and donate maximum so that poor school going students are benefited and can be issued with glasses / medicine free of cost and also get a opportunity to lead healthy life.
