CURRENT PROGRESS OF THE PROJECT
October, 2016 to December, 2016
School Children form an important large target group which must be screened adequately for early deduction of eye diseases and prevention of blindness. A total approach in a school eye health program must include teacher orientation and health education of children in addition to screening of eye diseases.
As we all know, Refractive error remains the second largest cause of visual impairment despite the fact that a simple pair of glasses can provide the correction. Uncorrected refractive error in school children can not only lead to amblyopia and loss of vision, but also affects the academic output of the child and eventually his economic productivity. Lack of refractive services or a lack of access to them compounds the issue in most developing countries. Previous studies have shown reasons for low uptake of corrective services to include inadequate access to services and the lack of affordable corrections. In Pakistan, 4% of the children below the age of 15 have refractive error and this age group constitutes 40% of the country’s population. The effort in extending refractive services to these populations should be designed for creating a significant impact. This research intends to study the costs and benefits of providing refractive screening and spectacle dispensing services to the school children in Pakistan The overall objective of School Eye Health program is to improve quality of life and educational capabilities by eliminating blindness and visual disability due to uncorrected refractive errors in school children of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The specific objectives/purpose of the School Eye Health Program is that “the prevalence of eye disease and refractive error decreased among children at community level. (age group 5 to 12)“. It will be achieved through following results.
Khyber Eye Foundation making its concerted effort to ensure that maximum students are screened for refractive error and are issued with glasses, so that the future of these children is secured. The team during the period visited 31 schools and screened 1235 students, 263 teacher were trained to carry out vision of each student, and out off 1235 students 835 students were diagnosed as refractive error and were issued spectacles free of cost worth of 825$
Story of a young boy who had refractive error and how his life changed after he was issued spectacles by the project team.
Ayaz is a student of class 1st.. Lives in a small village in Charsadda and studying in Government primary school Gul Abad. His father is driver and supporting 10 members of his family and has no other source of income. The School eye health program team visited to GPS gul abad district Charsadda and received vision testing form from teacher in which there was a name of Ayaz, when asked from him that how he used to do his class work from black board, he replied that he used to sit close to board to do his work but couldn’t see properly, he also told that he never goes out to play because of his weak vision. Before this, he never went anywhere for his eye check up because his father couldn’t afford to take him to doctor for his eye checkup.
Optometrist in a team did Ayaz’s refraction, before refraction his vision was 6/60 in both eyes. After refraction his vision becomes 6/6 in both eyes. He became really excited for his clear vision and was thankful to the team.
