In September, the Friends received notice of a $500,000 gift from the Gray Family Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation which will be an endowment to generate $25,000 annually specifically to fund our environmental education programs. Any funds generated through the GlobalGiving site would go to achieving our 2:1 match (which must be made in order to receive this annual contribution). We are indebted to the Gray Family for their faith in the Friends to continue to produce meaningful programs as well as for all the community environmental organizations and initiatives that they support. This is a significant gift for FOTC and one that will help stabilize and sustain our programs for years to come.
Other gifts include a first time, $5,000 grant from the Bank of America Foundation to support both school field trip scholarships and education program operations. This was a first time gift from B of A. Pacific Power Foundation also came back to support these same programs again this year with a $2,000 contribution. These funds will allow access to over 500 students who normally could not attend these offerings.
Programmatically, we served over 800 children in our annual summer day camp program and started off the school year with a very full schedule of field trips. We are most excited about continuing to grow a program with the Lake Oswego School District, assisting those students to tour and learn about their own lake watershed. We will serve over 900 5th and 6th grade students through that new program.
And finally, Executive Director, David Cohen, has become very involved with the Intertwine Alliance, a four-county association of recreation and nature based entities attempting to create greater access and resources for our region's green spaces. David provided a leadership role in setting up a Conservation Education Council which will oversee initiatives to improve educational opportunities and resources and has been asked to sit on the Alliance's founding Board of Directors.
