We believe in collaboration with Enugu State School health Services unit, Ministry of Health Enugu State, we can influence the attitudes and beliefs of most adolescents in Enugu educational zone about Tobacco and Alcohol use / abuse (risk behaviors) that may predispose them to cancer, mental health, heart/respiratory diseases etc.
Alcohol / tobacco abuse is becoming rampant among adolescents in Enugu and there is associated lack of awareness about the health consequences. Enugu State is in South East Nigeria, with a population of about 3.3 million (2006 census), of which 777,063 (385,305 males and 392,214 females) are adolescents. Population growth rate is 2.58% (2020).
We will set up health clubs in the schools that we'll be visiting, identify and train some interested teachers and students in each school into becoming healthy choices in tobacco and alcohol use ambassadors in their various schools. For the schools with an existing health club, this component will be incorporated into the club. We will keep in touch with them and they will in turn, keep sensitizing others in their schools.
Prior to Covid-19 pandemic period, alcohol / tobacco use and abuses have been observed among adolescents particularly males. We also observed that ignorance and peer pressures have sustained this behavior. If given the opportunity through your funding to cause a positive change, we hope to incorporate and retain this project in the state school health program undergoing changes this post Covid-19 period. This we hope to do through advocacy and using compelling results we hope to obtained.
