We eat to live. It is one of the most natural things we do every day. Yet, there are people who are unable do it the usual way because of an illness. The only means for them to receive essential elements is to take them in through the tube. There are 100 children between 0 and 18 under the care of Vera Fund, to whom enteral nutrition delivered through the tube is the only possible way to eat. To provide the nutrition in this specific form, we spend the average of 11,500$ per month.
Enteral nutrition is a special liquid food mixture containing protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. Whether it is terminal cancer or muscular dystrophy, a trauma, or one of thousands of organic disabilities that affect internal muscles and organs and cause digestional malfunction, children with different severe conditions require enteral feeding longterm. Some of them may be able to combine that with food in more trivial forms, others depend on tube feeding exclusively.
There is no insurance program that would provide nutrition for enteral feeding. And there are very few families with a terminally ill child who have not exhausted their financial capacity within the first months of taking care of the child in constant need for certain medication, supply materials, costly equipment, etc. We, the Vera Fund team, are there to guide and support them financially, in this case - by providing this particular form on nutrition, the only that will keep their child fed.
There are 300 children under the care of our Children's Support Program in Moscow and other cities. At least 100 of them live on tube feeding. Every day we learn that another child has lost the ability to eat independently. Every day we receive and carefully study a new request for support from the parents of a terminally ill child, who has not yet been taken into our care. With the funds we raise via this project, Vera Fund will be able to cover the cost of Enteral Nutrition for January 2015.
