Ensure safe child birth for vulnerable mothers

The project to support healthy deliveries encourages women to start antenatal care (ANC) visits early, during the first trimester(3) months of their pregnancy. The take-up of ANC services has been high in the last quarter, with over 30 women attending all four ANC visits—as recommended by our clinicians.  In the same period, the project assisted 53 normal deliveries, 24 assisted vaginal deliveries, 41 cesarean sections and 2 macerated still births.

Among the achievements listed, the project was instrumental in saving the life of a young mother whose story is narrated below:

Joy, a 27-year old mother of 3 from Kiruhura district, was referred to Mayanja Memorial Hospital through our village network after having attempted a Caesarean section delivery at a local clinic. Joy was brought to the hospital with parts of her placenta still in her womb, a high-fever and what transpired to become a life-threatening infection. Clinicians at the hospital were able to save Joy’s life by conducting a hysterectomy, though sadly, her baby did not survive.  Upon recovery, Joy was discharged and advised to come back for a review after two weeks. When she returned, though drained and recovering from a large emotional loss, she expressed much gratitude to the Mayanja Memorial Hospital’s safe delivery program:  “I would be dead by now if it wasn’t for the health worker who paid me a visit.”
