In Zimbabwe Gender based violence(GBV) and all forms of discrimination against girls have been perpetrated generation after another because of sexist harmful religious and cultral norms. Girls are vulnerable to HIV, Child Marriages and Poverty. To reduce its impact, Tag a Life International Trust(TaLI) started this initiative to provide Prevention and offer interventions for GBV through educating young boys to change attitudes against girls and empower girls to claim their rights.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

This project responds to Gender Based Violence (GBV) against the girl child in Pre-adolescent, Adolescents and Early Reproductive health ages in the chosen Zimbabwean communities. GBV has led to HIV infections and vulnerabilities in girls in the Zimbabwean communities. Vulnerabilities include HIV, Gender Inequalities, Male Norms/Sexism and Lack of Access by Girls to Information and Productive Resources.

How will this project solve this problem?

We engage Boys to Challenge Gender Inequalities, Male Norms and Sexism behaviors; shifting from 'would-be-perpetrators' position to become partners in curbing Gender Based Violence against girls. We empower girls to change their lives and those of girls around them. For girls we teach on reproductive health rights, HIV information & Prevention(including Post Exposure Prophyluxis-PEP), Gender and Confidence Building. Communities are sensitized to facilitate gender equality in homes for girls.

Potential Long Term Impact

When boys and girls are empowered, less girls suffer gender based violence. Boys become agencies of change in challenging norms that suppress girls and sexist attitudes are gone. Girls claim their rights in communities and take responsibilities for their lives. Lesser HIV infections in young girls. Girls enjoy equal rights as boys thus access to education and right to be children. Safety in communities and girls' economic status' is improved as they get equal opportunities.
