This project attempts to provide education to children of wastepickers, with a special focus on the girl child. Education and extra curricular trainings help provide these children with an ability to make better life choices.
An Actor in the Making:
13 year old Pooja is a charming young girl with a new found confidence and love for life. Not always like this, she has blossomed into an outgoing and sociable girl today, but not without struggle.
Pooja comes from a household ridden with hardships, mostly to do with financial difficulties. Married to an unemployed man at the age of 12, Pooja’s mother, Sapna began work as an agricultural labourer to support the household. Struggling to make ends meet for her two daughters, Pooja and Nandini, Sapna decided to leave Kolkata and come to Delhi in search of a better livelihood. She finally began wastepicking and settled down in Tuglaqabad.
Wastepicking helped improve the family’s financial crisis and Sapna was able to enroll both her daughters in the local government school. Pooja was always a shy and under-confident student. Despite being bright, her academic and extracurricular efforts often went unnoticed due to her reclusive and timid nature. This hindered her academics and she began to find it hard to continue her education.
It was around this time that she joined Chintan’s learning center at Tuglaqabad. Despite joining the center, it took a lot of coaxing and support to instill the slightest amount of confidence in Pooja. Even during her regular classes here, she preferred to take a back seat rarely voiced her opinions and thoughts. An attempt was made by the senior trainees at the learning center to help her develop holistically.
It took a lot of counseling and daily visits to her house by the senior trainees to develop and nurture a trusting relationship with Pooja. This worked wonders to help bring back her confidence and self-esteem. Soon she was assigned leadership tasks at the learning center and at school. After over a year and a half of persistent efforts, Pooja has completely transformed to a confident and gregarious student. Pooja also enjoys helping her younger siblings in their academics.
From an extreme introvert, she has metamorphosed into a girl who takes parts in various ‘Nukkad Natak’ or street plays. She is an active and vocal member of teams performing plays on themes such as child marriage, gender equality and the like. She most recently won accolades for her team performance at Jantar Mantar and Select City Walk Mall, Saket, Delhi. Pooja also recently played a character in a movie filmed on the life of children of wastepickers.
Motivated by her confidence and the appreciation she receives; she wants to pursue acting besides continuing her education.
