EmpowHer through Film: Help Girls Tell their story

by African Girls Empowerment Network

EmpowHer through Film will help 200 vulnerable young women and girls who have been raped, coerced into early child marriage and those who are victims of teenage pregnancy and female circumcision to acquire skills that will enable them to tell their own stories through film and speak out for their rights and that of other vulnerable women and girls who are victims of gender based violence in Nigeria, while also building a successful career in film making.

Nigeria is one of the countries in Africa where violence against women and girls such as rape, child, Early and Forced Marriage and Female Genital Mutilation practices is very stricken. It is estimated that 47% of Nigerian women are mothers before the age of 16 and I tell you, that figure includes my own sisters. Laws have been put in place, to protect women and girls, including the VAPP Act 2015 that prohibits rape and female circumcision in Nigeria, but we hear the cry of girls every day.

Our project is called "EmpowHer through Film " and we are working to end gender based violence in all its forms; child marriage, rape female genital mutilation and empower rape survivors, teenage mothers and victims of female genital mutilation through acting and Film making skills. We impact them with acting skills and ICT knowledge that will amplify their voices and help them to tell their stories for positive change.

Long-Term Impact

We believe that "Empowher through Film" project will positively impact the lives of Nigerian women, their families and the society at large. First, gender equality; by helping this vulnerable teenage mothers who have dropped out of school to build a successful career in acting and film making, they will be able to be in equal footing with men. And second, promote good health and wellbeing; by reducing the maternal mortality rate due to teenage pregnancy and the spread of HIV/AIDS due to rape
