Project Report | Oct 7, 2014
Edmund Rice-Day Care Centre - 6 Months to 3 year old

By Lucy Ndungu | Project Leader

This is the latest addition in our networks; a Day Care Centre for 6 months to 3 years old. The idea came about after the Mother and Baby program had so many malnourished babies due to nutrient deficiencies. Most mothers with children under three years felt they did not have a safe place to leave their children as they went to look for work. Therefore most opted to stay indoors to look out for them. A situation that presented a challenge of lack of food in the households. Most homes are headed by single mothers who mostly depend on casual labour from nearby industries or small enterprises. Therefore if they do not work they will have little or nothing to feed on asituation that led to malnourished babies.
To curb this condition a day care services was introduced. The aim is to allow more mothers to look for work and provide better and balanced diet for their children. The day care opened its doors on 28th of May and so far 40 children are already enrolled. Two women have been hired to take care of these babies. The babies receive a cup of nutritious porridge each on daily basis. However the parents chip in something small – 30 Shillings a day for this service. The children are well taken care of by the two women who feed them, teach them basic skills such as singing, playing children’s games etc.

 The following are the needs for the day care centre;

 Mattresses , floor carpets, toys, beddings, nutritious food for children plus porridge, pampers, soap, utensils,clothes.

We welcome Volunteers to come and spend a day with our babies.
