NIGEE is a Kenyan-based non-profit organization that helps school girls who dropped out due to teen pregnancy or child marriage. About 200 of these girls have completed high school and need vocational training to join the job market, and about 300 girls in school need a facility to convene during school holidays and be tutored on sciences and educated on reproductive health. The Girls' Empowerment Center will offer these services to 500 girls and host 50 victims of sexual violence.
NIGEE is currently serving 4 counties in former Nyanza Province of western Kenya. The community reports the worst health indicators nationally, including highest teen pregnancy (22.2%) and HIV prevalence (15.1% overall; 14-26% in the 4 counties); 2nd highest prevalence female genital mutilation (32.4%); 3rd highest physical and sexual violence against women and girls (33.5%). In all these, the girl-child is more affected, and educating them is one approach that can address these simultaneously
The Girls' Empowerment Center will provide vocational training to NIGEE girls who have completed high school to make them employable and self-reliant. It will provide space girls during school holidays to be educated in HIV, reproductive health/contraceptives and gender-based violence, and be tutored on subjects they are weak in. The Center will also provide safe space (with counselling, medical and legal support) for survivors of sexual & gender-based violence, including FGM and child marriage.
We will provide vocational training on hair dressing, computer literacy, tailoring, printing, research data collection, etc to 200 high school graduates of NIGEE program. This will make them employable hence self-reliant. We will bring 300 school girls together during holidays and train them in reproductive health and offer contraceptives; we will also train them about HIV and how to recognize, avoid and take action on gender-based violence. We will establish safe spaces for about 50 victim
