Virmani Trust started the Women Literacy Program in 2004 with the objective of educating the illiterate women. So that they can improve the quality of their life and the life of their entire family, and help them lead a life of dignity.
Illiteracy is big problem in India and more in slums. Women population constitutes a larger portion of total illiterate population. In India, the female literacy rate is around 65 percent as against the male literacy rate of around 82 percent. Hence, women education is very important to eradicate illiteracy. This low female literacy is also responsible for the dependency of women on men for activities which requires them to read and write.
we are giving education to the females who never get chance to study. At our 371 Women Literacy centers, 21,930 illiterate adult women would be taught Hindi, Arithmetic and a vocation with the help of Computer based functional Literacy Software. To start a centre, a lady from the community is selected and given training. Her jhuggi/Home serves as a class room for the women beneficiaries of the area. Hence, the system provides a suitable space for illiterate women in their own atmosphere.
