The school entrance
I ENVIRONMENT OF THE PROJECT
Glory Education Centre is a tiny school in the Kiambiu slums of Nairobi. Today the school receives 98 pupils from 3 to 10 years old children coming from the surrounding slums. Our primary objective is to provide them with good quality and free education, as it is the first step to going out from rough poverty they are struggling with.
This school is entirely funded by the parents of the pupils and the support from our NGO Tumaini through the generous donors from GlobalGiving. The fundraising pays the three teachers and all the resources (books, uniforms, pen, tables, board and so forth) we manage to get in past two years.
II FOCUS ON THE 3 PAST MONTH
We receive this last three month 100 $ through GlobalGiving. Thanks to your tremendous support and local volunteers we managed the last few months to run these following activities:
- Food program
In last three months, we visited pupils several times. We have received 100$ from generous donors we have divided into two lunch options for 13 days. The first option is chapatis beans tomatoes and onions .in the second option the chapatis are replaced with a portion of rice. The total price of the food was $ 97.1, and the rest was used for transportation
Thanks to your support pupils will receive full meal three times per week next two months. Our goal is to provide them with full lunch every school day.
- Health program
As part of our health program activity, we visited the school on 7th May and carried out a general cleaning of inside and outside areas of the school. Surrounding areas of the Glory Education Centre are in an extremely polluted area that creates a hazardous playground for pupils. During which we also provided maintenance of the interior of the school. For instance - cleaning school desks, fixing posters, sweeping and other minor fixes. These activities were executed during the food program visits, and they didn't carry any cost.
Thanks to this proactive steps, the pupil can now play freely outside the school and without any danger of hurting themselves (there is not broken glasses or other sharp objects).
III CHALLENGE AND UPCOMING EVENTS
The most significant long-term challenge for Glory Education Centre is to find permanent housing for the classroom(s). In present days, education takes place in a rented facility that is draining the small amount of money this organization has; on top of that, 90+ pupils are crowded in one room. On top of that, the school has been given a notice which is stating that this part of slams will be demolished.
In next three months we are preparing following activities: (i) continue campaigning for long-term food program (ii) looking for an appropriate location or building for the relocation of the school
