Scene 2.3

Int. Daytime - Lunchroom

Alisha and Aliyah meet up at lunch.

Alisha

"Where have you been?.”

Aaliyah

"Oh I was cutting school with Ty. However, it got awkward once he try to pressure me to have sex with him. I wasn't ready and I was sure of it.”

Alisha

(surprised)

"I can’t believe that.”

Aaliyah

"I’m going to be ready soon, but at that very moment I needed more time. Ty told me that I had to be ready the next time because he's been waiting for too long.”

Alisha

"No man can force you to do what you don’t want to do. Therefore no matter what, if you don't say so then don't do it. Don't rush into anything, trust me...

Inspired by the work they created with the MyBlockNYC intitiative, making documentaries about healthy relationships, our students decided that they wanted their film to be about romantic relationships and teacher-student relationships. The class created characters, drawing from the real-life inspirations around their school. A team of selected scriptwriters has now taken those characters and let them loose into a plot filled with drama, valuable lessons, and general thoughts about what makes a healthy, respectful relationship at an inner-city high school.

We are currently in the process of shooting the script with student-actors recruited through a school-wide casting search. Teachers and students have signed on to act in the project, and we are looking forward to being done with production soon.

We are excited to announce that our students completed their first major assignment of the year, a documentary project lead by our partner MyBlockNYC!

Facilitated through a step-by-step filmmaking process, our students got hands-on experience with HD cameras, shooting techniques, and editing software. Once they were trained, we asked them respond to the question," What does a healthy relationship look like at this school?"

Working in pairs and individually, our students spent the next month interviewing their peers, teachers, parents, and even the principal about everything from romance to gentrification!

PCI Media Impact and MyBlockNYC are extremely proud to present one of these films to you in this report, by one of our lovely students, Soma. Entitled "Dean Carl", this short documentary hightlights the importance of honest teacher-student relationships in inner-city schools.

These last 3 months have been busy ones for our students! MyBlockNYC's short documentary program has kept them active by giving them digital cameras and tasking them to film their communities in action. Each student has chosen a specific topic under the banner of healthy relationships, and will interview people in their communities according to that topic. Students are asking: what makes healthy friendships, partnerships, marriages, and families?

By the end of November, our students will have finished their documentaries. After viewing them, the students will discuss the similarities and differences in between the answers they received for the different questions. They will also decide on which specific issues feel the most urgent. By identifying which themes need to be highlighted, our students will ensure that the drama at the end of this year-long project will be useful to their communities.

On behalf of the students and everyone working on the My School - My Community Program, I'd like to thank you for your continued support. Please spread the word and consider giving again for an arts-based initiative that is providing a platform for students to learn about social engagement and communication.

This Summer, we have been hard at work re-tooling our curriculum to better assist schools in the classroom implementation of the My School method. This year's program will focus on building not just capacity in the students, but specialization so as to play to the individual strengths in the classroom.

We are also excited to bring a partner onboard, local New York-based non-profit MyBlockNYC! MyBlockNYC.com is an interactive mapping website that captures and presents personal video accounts of the life and culture of New York City in order to create an intimate, evolving, and complete portrait of this great city. Users upload videos geographically, building the first fully interactive video map of New York City. As part of their in-class program, MyBlockNYC will be working with our students to create documentaries and build their filmmaking skills through hands-on learning! Check them out here: www.myblocknyc.com

Stay tuned for our project blog that will track the progress in the class and for updates on when the students will be sharing their work!

We are proud to update the My School-MyCommunity page with some exciting news from the Bronx!

One of our partner schools, Eagle Academy for Young Men, recently screened their student-made film, broaching the subjects of poverty and gang violence, for their fellow peers. The students organized the event themselves, extending an invitation to their classmates to come view the film and participate in a lively discussion afterwards.

Not only did the students marshall a solid turnout from the school, they also attracted the attention of the local media! Please click the link below to view a local news story on Eagle Academy’s film and the screening:

Our other schools are currently in the process of filming and editing their final products. We are excited to see how thier films turn out alongside the content that Eagle Academy has produced!

Check back soon to find out more about the films that these students are creating!
