Life Skills for School Dropout RuralGirls in India

Summary

This project is intended to empower 100 Dalit girls in health and life skills education during a period of one year in Chittoor district in A.P state in India through conscious raising and awareness exercises. These impoverished communities, unlettered for several generations are lacking of basic knowledge and information about health and personal hygiene. They are subjected to several forms of active discrimination like illiteracy, poverty, low self esteem, child marriages and malnutrition.

Challenge

The Dalits are impoverished communities in India. The girl children dropout from schools to support their parents in house hold chores at a very tender age and are subjected to several forms of discrimination like illiteracy, poverty, child marriages and malnutrition. Most of the Girls are not adequately aware of their puberty, reproductive health and nutritional needs. They have very little knowledge of their health, hygiene and reproductive practices and engage in risky living practices.

Solution

This Project will address the problem by raising the awareness levels of adolescent girls through a structured learning process about their health, personal hygiene, coping mechanism, nutritional and reproductive health care. Periodic health education, health check up camps and counseling will be conducted. They will be trained in raising backyard kitchen gardens in order to supplement the intake of nutritious diet and will be offered Kitchen Garden Kit consisting of Seeds and Plant nutrients.

Long-Term Impact

The long term impact will be: Increased levels of awareness on health and hygiene, Reproductive health and decreased number of atrocities and abuse. There will be increased support system to cope up adolescence and its associated psycho-social vulnerability and increased confidential levels. Decreased number of child marriages, teenage pregnancies. Newly acquired skills inducing confidence to cope up harsh economic conditions, Malnutrition and Supplementary income through Economic activity
