Empowering residents at Langoni Old People's Home

by The Happy Africa Foundation

Summary

By building a permanent communal shelter it will enable the residents to interact socially and engage in stimulating activities, having a positive impact on their mental and physical health. A security wall will protect the vulnerable residents from local criminal behaviour, and maintenance of the vegetable garden will provide them with a sustainable source of fresh nutritious food, improving their health. We will provide access to vital medical services and will contribute to funeral costs.

Challenge

Located in a poverty-stricken area and without relatives to look after them the elderly are placed into an underfunded and under-resourced government home. Without much physical or mental stimulation the elderly become weaker and live out their days isolated, house bound, and without dignity. As they are particularly vulnerable they become targets of theft and criminal behaviour resulting in a life of fear. They have limited access to vital medical care and nobody to pay for their funeral.

Solution

Providing opportunities for activities and social interaction will stimulate the residents and empower them to engage in enriching life choices. An increased sense of comradery, nutritious fresh food, improved access to medical care, and a sense of value and belonging will all combine to improve the physical, emotional, and mental health of all the residents. The security wall will be the first priority as none of these goals can be achieved while they live hidden in fear of crime.

Long-Term Impact

Once the home is safe and communal, and the holistic health of the residents has improved, the impact will be felt by all those involved. The security wall will protect the produce of the vegetable garden so the residents will reap more nutritious produce, strengthening them even more. When residents thrive they become empowered to have control over their lives and the quality of their care. Increased health will reduce medical costs so more can be spent on necessities like staff.
