Last year, Girls on the Run - DC offered financial assistance to 76% of girls who participated in the character development program and continue to see that need grow. By donating today, YOU can help girls feel greater confidence in who they are and what they can accomplish. Your donation will support program scholarships for 20 girls and help them find the positive in themselves and others. You're giving girls social, emotional and physical well-being at a critical time in their lives.
While DC is an international center of power and influence, it also has areas of distress. DC's childhood obesity rate is 33.8% and the children living in poverty in wards 7 and 8 are approaching 40% and 50%, respectively. DC girls from low-income neighborhoods havefew options for programsfocused on either fitness/healthy living or mentor-based character education programs. Girls on the Run - DC offers both in one program.
Girls on the Run - DC provides a character development program for girls in 3rd - 8th grade in all eight wards of Washington, DC, and in Prince George's County, that teaches social, emotional and physical well-being using a research-based curriculum.
An external 2017 study of the Girls on the Run program showed that 97% of third through fifth grade participants said they learned critical life skills through their participation in the 10-week program, and use these skills to better resolve conflict, manage emotions and help others. In addition, 85% of girls improved in confidence, competence, caring, character, or connection to others.
