The hearing-impaired youths under 25 are more useful to society. But, they are discriminated against socially and economically in Nepal. Their misery is multiplied as they do not have computer skills that a job requires. To address this grave issue of human dimension, Synergy Nepal(SN) has a plan to empower about 10 thousand youths within 5 years. The project has a strategy for their empowerment by providing MS digital education, and Windows OS based technical skills enhancing entrepreneurship.
The problem is the pitiable existence of nearly 80,000 Nepali citizens who are afflicted by hearing-impaired disability. In terms of gender division, 52 percent is constituted by male, 48 percent by female. Most of these unfortunate citizens are in great disadvantage because their parents and they are steeped in poverty. The hearing-impaired are illiterate and ignorant of the possibility of improved way life through the use of computer education, hardware technology and entrepreneurship.
The project will address initially these problems by providing a) skill training on Microsoft based digital literacy-computer application, b) hardware training on the repair and maintenance of communication device-mobile set with Window OS. and c) entrepreneurship training.
Given the access to the technical skills, 29 hearing-impaired can be made feel more comfortable socially and economically, and thus help them earn livelihood in their own environment. This way they can even contribute substantially towards local business. The objectives of SN are in accord with the current three-year national Plan's goals for making the hearing-impaired useful citizens through state protection of their rights. The project reduces digital divide and helps have dignified lives.
