This project will empower 600 teenage mothers living in Monaragala district, Uva province Sri Lanka, who married without legal entity in aged between 16- 18 and victimized socially and economically due to the abandonment of the partners. This critical issue has not been addressed yet by the responsible authorities, therefore, the project will assist them to regain their lives by providing opportunities to protect their rights, to organize themselves and to develop their skills and resources
One of the serious issues of Monaragala District in Sri Lanka is underage marriages. Among these, VDC was able to identify a group of teenage mothers who had developed sexual relationships with the hope of marriage and later deserted by the partners with a child. Due to the gaps in marriage law, they cannot even claim maintenance. They are marginalized and cornered in the family, in the community and do not have any access to get assistance from any social welfare scheme.
Through a mobilization process, VDC makes teenage mothers more aware of their rights, skills, resources and grouping them in the village level to work collectively with systematically planned activities. They are also strengthed by giving capacity building training to act as a pressure group in district level for demanding their rights. After providing technical support to use their skills and resources accurately for income generating, financial assistance will be given to sustain them.
The project will empower 600 teenage mothers allowing them to regain their lives with self-confidence. Their stable income which will be generated by improving their skills and resources with the technical and financial assistance of the project will be helping them to live fairly and squarely with their children. Their collective efforts in the village and at the district level will assure their social security which is most important to overcome future challenges.
