MAKING  MEN  OUT OF 2000 BOYS IN THARAKA -KENYA

Summary

In the effort to prevent and reduce gender based violence within Tharaka Nithi county,PCOSES aims at making responsible men by reaching out to adolescent boys and youth through support in education, mentorship, and support with start up kits ( income generation activities) to help them move from vulnerability to resilience. This will reduce the current alarm trends of violence against girls All stakeholders will be involved at all levels of the project to ensure transparency and sustainability

Challenge

in Tharaka Nithi county,cases if violence against women and children are on the increase. This is due to low income levels among families and especially among the bread winners(Men). Young men have resulted in killing their lovers and to the extreme,their children too. The county has witnessed several deaths of young men who have committed suicide due to inability to support themselves. Drugs us has also increased especially the use of Bhang, Alchohol and Khat(Miraa) among the young men.

Solution

The project will with and for the young boys /men in the society to ensure that the become responsible in and out of school. Mentorship to the boys will be age appropriate and a continous process. To initiate the project,PCOSES will engage the County government and relevant stakeholders for support

Long-Term Impact

There will be less gender based violence against women and children. litracy levels will be higher in the community which will enhance negotiation skills. There will be reduction of stigma and discrimination on boy living with HIV and at the end of the project the boys will have learnt the skill of self reliance through income generating activities
