The Earth Summit Is Over, but SustainUS Delegates Are Still Going Strong
By Louise Yeung (Chair) & Kate Catlin (COP18 Leader) - SustainUS
On Monday, November 26th, SustainUS entered the next United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP18) in Doha, Qatar with one of the largest youth delegations we’ve ever had. In Doha we are fighting to protect the next generation as the leaders of the world design a new climate change mitigation treaty.
Our delegation is comprised of youth from a variety of geographical and cultural backgrounds across the United States. Without the generosity of our friends and families, not all of us could have financed expensive local hotel rates or international flights.
However, what you’ve truly funded was not our travel costs, but our work. We hope to bring intergenerational climate justice to these negotiations, and we’re already off to a good start. Before even hitting the ground in Doha, we::
• Held dozens of community events to educate our hometowns on climate change. • Planned a conference call with Deputy Special Envoy for Climate Change, Jonathan Pershing. • Instigated a new international youth rallying call: “climate legacy” • Launched a new Rapid Response Network, which you can join at: http://sustainus.org/join-the-us-climate-rapid-response-network
