For over four years, the Aku community in Okigwe LGA, Imo State, has faced violent attacks that displaced families, burned homes, and destroyed livelihoods. Children are out of school, widows lack support, and many women and youth live with trauma and extreme hardship. The Empower Future Initiative is launching an urgent project to provide relief, restore education, rebuild homes, and equip families with the skills to recover and rebuild their lives.
Aku was once a peaceful rural community, but continuous armed attacks have turned it into a humanitarian disaster zone. Over 100 homes have been burned Schools, churches, and markets destroyed Families forced to flee into bushes and nearby communities Children drop out of school Women and youth lose livelihoods and stability Trauma, hunger, and displacement now define daily life As insecurity worsens, access to food, education, healthcare, and safe shelter becomes nearly impossible.
Empower Future Initiative (EFI) is responding through a long-term, community-centered project that provides both immediate relief and pathways to recovery: Food and hygiene kits for 1,000 displaced families Support to re-enroll 350 displaced children in school Uniforms, fees, and learning materials Training for displaced women and youth in tailoring, catering, ICT, and agribusiness. Startup kits and micro-grants for 200 trainees. Reconstruction of 2 community schools.
This project aims to support more than 5,000 people directly, especially women and children, helping them: Regain stability, dignity, and hope Access education and skills for long-term income Heal from trauma and rebuild community bonds Strengthen resilience against future insecurity Restore essential structures-homes, schools, and the local market By rebuilding Aku, we are securing a future where families no longer live in fear but are empowered to thrive again.
