Help us rebuild the post-conflict Maya Ixil community of Chajul, Guatemala that was devastated during the country's 36-year civil war. Your gift will empower its youth by providing educational opportunities to 60 middle and high school scholars. They receive scholarships and supplies, work opportunities, access to our community library and computer lab, Spanish classes, life-skills workshops, career counseling, and mentorship, empowering them to overcome hardship and forge bright futures!
The village of Chajul is tucked away in the highlands of Guatemala. The parents of today's youth survived violence that amounted to genocide during the war. Today, the community remains impoverished and deeply scarred. Due to lack of resources, only 11% of Chajul's youth graduate from high school. Parents dream that their children will have the educational opportunities they did not, as many only completed a couple years of schooling if they ever even attended at all.
We support youth in families who value education but lack resources to cover the costs of their children's schooling. Our Youth Development Program provides scholarships, alongside needed support services including Spanish classes, tutoring, computer classes, life-skills workshops, and work-study opportunities. Scholars also receive mentorship from local staff-role models who reveal a world full of possibilities and encourage them to pursue a life that overcomes Chajul's difficult history.
Our scholars graduate from the Youth Development Program with the academic, professional, and leadership skills needed to help their community recover from genocide and increase future educational opportunities. They are the future leaders and change makers of Chajul - teachers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, political leaders, farmers, mothers, and fathers. Their children will grow up with parents who place a high value on education and who can support them financially and emotionally.
