CHATS Girls' Club Updates - Fall 2022

CHATS at Ludzi Girls Secondary School
CHATS at Ludzi Girls Secondary School

School is back in session, and AGE Africa has exciting news to share! We are proud to announce that our CHATS life skills program is now available at 19 new schools in Malawi’s central region! It’s AGE Africa’s first expansion in 15 years. Nearly 5,000 girls attended CHATS Girls’ Club sessions in the first week, and attendance remains strong.

Our expansion is only possible because of supporters like you. 90% of adolescent girls in Malawi that participate in CHATS clubs complete secondary school, which is remarkable when 7% of girls graduate from secondary school nationally. We look forward to sharing updates on the progress of our girls in our expansion area.

In Mulanje District, where AGE Africa has delivered CHATS life skills programs and scholarships since 2015, an AGE Africa Alumnae graduated from Kamuzu University of Health Science with a Bachelor of Science in Dentistry. She received a medal at her graduation for being the FIRST woman to complete a certificate in dentistry. Our scholar credits her experience at CHATS girls’ clubs for reinforcing her leadership skills, providing goal-setting tools, and career guidance for her academic success. She is now on her way to utilizing the skills she learned and making positive contributions to the Malawian public and private sectors.

AGE Africa’s alumnae are invited to serve as mentors for one or two years or as guest speakers to support CHATS programs. These opportunities provide alumnae with training in program management and other operational skills and role models for girls still in secondary school, contributing to improved school attendance and graduation rates in schools where AGE Africa is active.

Thank you for supporting our work and helping us reach more girls with a life-changing program.
