We empower 50 young filmmakers in conflict-affected regions of DR Congo by providing training in screenwriting, storytelling, and film production. Through annual residencies in Goma and Bukavu, participants collaborate, receive mentorship, and gain the tools to tell authentic African stories that uplift their communities and preserve cultural memory.
In conflict-affected regions like North Kivu, youth face high unemployment, lack of cultural infrastructure, and limited access to professional artistic training. Many talented young Congolese filmmakers are unable to develop their ideas due to the absence of platforms that offer technical support, guidance, or funding. This results in underrepresentation of African voices and stories in global cinema.
The Nyiragongo Cinematic Residency will bring together 50 aspiring filmmakers from Goma, Bukavu, Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, and Kisangani. Through workshops in screenwriting, mentorships with experienced professionals, and pitch sessions with funders, participants will gain the skills to bring their stories to life. Selected projects will receive production grants to complete professional short films.
By training and funding emerging filmmakers, this project will build a new generation of cultural leaders in DR Congo. These creators will not only promote peace and identity through storytelling, but also stimulate the local creative economy. Over time, this initiative will support the development of a sustainable film industry that can reshape the narrative of Africa from within.
