Stephen R. Covey's legacy continues to inspire change makers in Cambodia and around the world.
With more than 25 million copies sold in 38 languages, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is often referred to as one of the most influential leadership books on the market. While many may think of 7 Habits as primarily a 'self help' book for MBAs and Fortune 500 companies, its "unchanging principles" such as "be proactive" "begin with the end in mind" and "seek first to understand" are also being utilized by grassroots leaders committed to protecting children in their community.
Among its many approaches to helping build capacity of grassroots projects to achieve their goals to address abuse, exploitation and trafficking, last year Doorsteps launched 7 Habits book clubs. Over a course of several months, a small group of grassroots leaders come together to discuss each habit, and its relevance to their work. The current cohort, made up of 20 Khmer leaders, began meeting in Phnom Penh this March and are currently reading and discussing Habit 3: Put First Things First. By discussing, understanding, and contextualizing the principles of each habit, these leaders can further envision how their projects will create sustainable change and provide alternatives for families and children vulnerable to abuse.
