Rakai Community Based AIDS Organization (RACOBAO) through the Global Giving website received a donation of $250 in July 2010 and purchased 8 goats to benefit 4 HIV positive widows in Lyantonde District Uganda. These widows, who have been economically affected, received 2 goats each. The intention is to boost their incomes since the goats multiply fast are easy to manage and are on high demand by buyers. The goat project in these families will contribute to improved livelihoods and food security at household level through utilization of the returns from the sale of off springs. The goat distribution will also contribute to increased enrollment, attendance and performance among school going age group within the families because the income from sales will in addition be utilized to provide the scholastic materials.
The total funding goal of the Project; “Empower 300 HIV positive women with goats in Uganda” is $20,000. RACOBAO will buy more goats to benefit the remaining 292 widows as the donations come in.
Below is Harriet Kabbundu’s story one of the beneficiaries of the goats
Kabbundu Harriet 47, an HIV positive widow had almost lost all hope when her husband died in 2007. On top of having inadequate food, medicine and household basics, Harriet has 4 children to take care of: one son and 3 daughters.
Harriet received 2 she goats to enable boost her family’s income from RACOBAO through Global giving. This has provided this family with reason to endure. “As these goats multiply, my children can now enjoy a better life and attend school.
