Harriet 36 years, a resident of Kikumbano Village, Kibuuka parish, Lwamagwa Sub County, Rakai District. Heads a household of 4 children, the eldest is 13 years and the youngest is 6 years. Three are studying in Primary School.
Her husband died of HIV and AIDS in 2004 when children were still very young and Harriet was expecting. “My husband left me with a small piece of land and a small grass thatched hut/house in which we stayed until 2010 when RACOBAO counselor Mr. Eric Kyarisima came to our rescue”.
When Eric identified this family they were in sole state with nothing to eat, Harriet was very weak and could not manage to cultivate her own food. The small banana plantation was in a very poor condition due to lack of care. This is the time when counselor Eric referred Harriet to undertake an HIV/AIDS test at Rakai hospital and after the test it was found out that Harriet was HIV positive and was enrolled on ART immediately given her poor health condition. Harriet’s source of income was from selling labour for food and other domestic needs.
Harriet says: “When I regained some energy I started cultivating some little food on the small piece of land which could not produce enough food for the family. The little food that we had cultivated could be stolen by thieves at night making the problem bigger for me to handle”.
RACOBAO, through counselor Eric gave Harriet three goats to boost her income with support from Global giving in March 2011. She is taking care of the goats such that she can sell off the off springs to cater for the domestic requirements, medical bills, and supplement to food.
“I am grateful to RACOBAO and Global Giving for the support rendered to me which is going to change my whole family life. Iam envisaging a situation where I can cater for my all needs without going to neighbors to sell labor instead work in my own plantation. My children are very happy I am now respected in my village since I also have an asset now”. Thank you Global Giving.
