This year has been a challenging one in terms of project implementation.Covid-19 has changed the dynamics of social meetings. Our community in Sotik is no different .The Covid-19 infections started in Nairobi the capital city but have now rapidly spread to the rural areas. It is here that HiH EA identified the gap in information especially to rural communities .We decided to first respond to the needs of the people through information sharing campaign and hand washing stations in markets and public spaces. The photos show HiH EA distributing tanks and also training on hand washing.
Looking forward, we still have not met our target to enable us implement the project to completion .We are still fundraising for the project and we encourage support from all quarters to enable the project to create Sustainable livelihoods for 220 farmers along the poultry value chain in Sotik sub-County, Kenya. We implore your support through the following channels .
It has been an unpredictable few months around the world, in Kenya and in Bomet where our project is domiciled, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Our communities have been working towards survival from day to day. When the first cases of Covid-19 were reported in Kenya on 13th March 2020, it was shocking and most businesses and individuals went into panic mode. Due to government regulations movement was restricted .The immediate need identified among our small holder farmers between April and June was the need for information pertaining to COVID-19. Our field officers were affected by the cessation of movement regulations but kept in touch with the communities through giving credible information on Covid-19 .The information pack included Symptoms of the disease, how to minimize the spread of the disease and what to do incase one suspected they had the disease. That was the ongoing concern during the first three months: The protection of lives before livelihoods.
In the coming month we plan to resume training for our poultry project .We plan to pair Covid-19 sensitization on the ground with the implementation of our project .We already have a partner who will help with technical support in terms of training and market linkage in poultry farming. Projecting on the next few months, prices of agricultural produce will be high as we approach the festive season and thus we plan to empower our farmers to make more money during this period from their Poultry sales.
We are still fundraising for the project and we encourage support from all quarters to enable the project to create Sustainable livelihoods for 220 farmers along the poultry value chain in Sotik sub-County, Kenya
At Hand in Hand Eastern Africa(HiH EA) we are excited to be implementing this project. The past 2 months have been spent setting up structures for the project in terms of creating awareness on the project outcomes to the implementors on the ground .From mapping potential small holder farmers to work with to scouting for potential partners who will work with us in this project. The smallholder farmers have already gone through the HiH EA enterprise training module and will look upon this project to provide the expertise in technical terms to accelerate their poultry enterprises. The task ahead is forming the Community Based Organization(CBO) which will enable the small holder farmers to enjoy economies of scale and marketing opportunities. The CBO will be owned and run by the smallholder farmers and we envision after the project the small holder farmers will be profitably running businesses along the Poultry value chain and will harness the backward and forward linkages to earn more profit. In the months to come the project will take shape with bustling activities among the smallholder farmers ,implementing the training they will recieve from HiH EA.
We are still fundraising for the project and we encourage support from all quarters to enable the project to create Sutainable livelihoods for 220 farmers along the poultry value chain in Sotik town, Kenya
