The struggle for women to gain access to education remains a serious challenge in Burma. We women makes higher education accessible to the women of Burma so they are equipped to become leaders and take part in the decision making process in this time of change. By profiling emerging women leaders of Burma, the difficulties they face and how they overcome them, We women will inspire a new generation while raising funds to provide professional and educational opportunities for these future leaders
In Burma, there is a greater likelihood that parents will keep their boys in school and take the girls out,not supporting daughters going to school if there is limited funding. This leads to deepening of differences between genders and consolidates inequality. Women from Burma are motivated to take part in the struggle to gain human rights for their people, but feel that without education they are pushed back into traditional roles that do not allow them the freedom and mobility to contribute.
We Women supports women from Burma to gain an education and a career. To bring our work and the struggle of so many women from Burma to the attention of a broader audience, we are highlighting the unacknowledged, emerging women leaders of Burma, whose passion and work benefits their community, who have overcome obstacles and risked their personal safety to achieve. Through their examples we will inspire a new generation while raising funds to enable more women to gain access to an education.
We will educate 70 women from Burma annually, all selected on their leadership skills and community work background. During, and after completing, their education they will work in their communities and thousands will benefit. Educated women are empowered to participate in change, they play a major economic role, they tend to be healthier, participate more in the formal labor market, earn more income and provide better health care and education to their family, lifting households out of poverty.
