The Ukrainian people are facing another humanitarian crisis and they urgently need our support. This war is a defeat for humanity! It threatens a humanitarian catastrophe of unimaginable proportions. A war that the people of Ukraine did not cause and that no one in the country wished for. According to UNHCR, more than 3,2 million people (1,5 million children) have fled Ukraine. In the biggest cities and in the small villages there is a lack of food products, medicines and other hygiene products.
"This war is a defeat for humanity! It threatens a humanitarian catastrophe of unimaginable proportions. A war that the people of Ukraine did not cause and that no one in the country wished for. The people of Ukraine now urgently need our support. And they need this help quickly!" appeals Michael Landau, President of Caritas Austria and Caritas Europa, urgently.
Elderly people, children and single parents, internally displaced persons and people with disabilities are among the most vulnerable groups who urgently need support from aid organizations. Heavy fighting and shelling continue across several towns and cities in Ukraine, with increasing human cost and humanitarian consequence. Organized in the strong international Caritas network we are currently supporting the emergency aid directly in Ukraine as well as in the neighbouring countries.
Caritas has been working on the ground for almost 30 years. Currently, more then 1,000 Caritas employees support vulnerable groups in Ukraine - in the east of the country as well as in all other parts of the country and in the neighbouring countries. Probably no other Austrian aid organization is as present in Ukraine as Caritas. As a result, some 800,000 people have been reached since the outbreak of the crisis in 2014 and our help is getting through. And it is urgently needed right now!
