Pakistan is the world's 6th most populus country, with a population of over 196 million. More than half of this population lives in poverty and at least 25 million school aged children are not in school. Additinonally, many are subjected to terrible violence at the hands terrorist organizations. In light of this recent violence, we stand behind a phiolosphy of “Guns kill terrorists. Education kills terrorism.” Education is no’t the quick fix that some organizations tend to prioritize, but it is the solution to ending conflict and poverty so that people can choose peace and prosperity over violence and despair.
Each year we like to share the story of one of our students, this year we want to share Madiha's story. Madiha is from Waziristan, a region in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Area near the Swat Valley. Notably, this is where the recent Nobel Peace Prize winner, Malala Yousafzai, survived a Taliban attack. Women are severely repressed in this region and there are no schools available to girls, as the Taliban banned girls' education. Mahida's uncle, who lives near one of the free MDF schools outside of Islamabad, wanted to help his nieces and nephews by providing them with an opportunity to attend school. When Madiha turned five, her uncle brought her and her brothers and sisters to Barakahu. There they are learning to read, write, and gain skills that help to lift them out of destitution. Although Mahida is far from her parents, she is thriving alongside her siblings. she is learning to think critically and making new friends. Madiha especially loves art, her teacher, and, of course, recess! Her confidence and love of learning grows daily. She is one of hundreds of students that are deeply grateful for her school and the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
Please join us in supporting Madiha and other students like her. The Marshall Direct Fund works to reduce the number of students in Pakistan out of school.
