Challenge

Lacking access to an education that would lift them out of poverty, vast numbers of Mexico's youth are at risk of falling prey to drug cartels, unless another option presents itself. LISI was established in 2004 as an alternative school for talented youth living in poor communities and who might otherwise be drawn into gang activity, substance abuse, and crime. The LISI education model includes integrative curricula with a strong emphasis on leadership, life skills and moral development.

Solution

LISI's operations have been primarily funded by a group of generous benefactors until the recent Coronavirus outbreak where it has influenced a 46.5% budget fall in our donations and a 50% cut in our teacher and administrative salaries. As the pandemic continues, LISI could face a notable reduction in student services or could halt operations all together.

Long-Term Impact

In the short run, sponsoring 669 youth with LISI scholarships does not only prevent them from joining the Mexican cartels, but also helps prepare them for college, their chosen professions and to become pillars of support to their families and communities at large.
