The Camfed Safety Net Fund is directly reducing the risk to vulnerable children in rural areas of Tanzania of dropping out of school. With the help of teacher mentors trained by Camfed, schools have identified the children in their communities most in need, and the items they require to continue with their studies. Across Camfed's partner schools in Tanzania, including in the Kilosa District targeted by this project, children have been provided with stationery, school uniforms, sanitary protection, payment of exam fees, food and other necessities to keep them attending and achieving at school.
In the first quarter of 2008, 407 schools in Tanzania have been given Safety Net Fund grants to support their most vulnerable students. Of these 407 schools, 276 are primary schools and 131 are secondary schools.
Reports to date show that 6,445 children are currently benefiting from the Camfed Safety Net Fund in Tanzania.
Trainings have also been conducted at the district level to support schools to manage the Camfed Safety Net Fund efficiently and transparently. These trainings were aimed at school heads, school committee members and district-level community development committee members, and focus on skills to effectively manage and monitor the Safety Net Funds, including the selection of beneficiaries and the maintenance of accountable systems through which funds are disbursed.
The Safety Net Fund in Tanzania is enabling otherwise marginalized and vulnerable youth to reach their full potential, and your donations to this project are directly benefiting the lives of these children.
