I never heard a better rendition of Old MacDonald's Farm, complete with face-masks for oink oinks and moo moos. I never saw a happier, prouder bunch of parents in my life either. The parents, all day-laborers in Kathmandu, some of the poorest and hardest working folks you can find had come to watch their children sing, dance and perform. And sing and dance they did! The event was the result of weeks of practice, practice and more practice. The staff and kids had worked untold hours to make costumes and decorate the stage.
The kids started off with the Nepali national anthem that had the whole crowd on it's feet. For nearly two hours, one age group after another made speeches thanking their families, sang songs and performed dances. The dozen or so Mountain Fund volunteers who attended with me had just as much fun as the kids, perhaps more.
To think that not long ago, these children who come from homes where the parents can't read or right, were only able to say a few words in English, if any. Now they were on the stage, under the lights and singing song after song as loud and clear as could be. Well done, what a day, what a treat to have been there. Check the photos and be sure to catch our link to Old MacDonald on YouTube starring the kids of Orchid Garden.
Can't wait for the next parent and sponsor day.
