Summary

This project supports the PPDR free primary school (grades 1-4) that exists to educate and empower refugee children and other vulnerable children in Kampala. Right now, the school ends at 1pm because we are not able to provide lunches. This project will extend the school day to 5pm. As part of our empowerment strategy, we also train adult refugees to serve as teachers in the school. In addition, we provide basic care and protection for all children, including their health care.

Challenge

Uganda welcomes refugees from different countries such as the DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, and Somalia, but here we do not have enough infrastructure to accommodate all refugee children in schools. More that 35,000 refugee children in Kampala cannot access primary education due to discrimination, lack of fair policy, and impossibly high school fees for many refugee parents who are often unemployed and have no any other form of humanitarian assistance.

Solution

This project will sustain the primary school which will offer primary education to 300 refugee and vulnerable children each year. It will provide access to formal education including English and French classes. This project will not charge the children for any services. We will also be training refugees teachers to take up the task of educating other refugees and become empowered to advocate for better policies in the education.

Long-Term Impact

This project will foster the next set of leaders to advocate for refugee rights in East Africa and therefore create a more peaceful and just world.

This project has provided additional documentation in a Microsoft Word file (projdoc.doc).
