SAFE PWANI will provide 20,000 people living in rural communities with vital health education through world-class theatre, encouraging safe sexual practice and bridge-building with medical services.
In remote Kenyan communities stigma and discrimination regarding HIV is extremely high with many People Living With HIV being chased from their families. Although the Kenyan Government provides free anti-retroviral treatment, hospitals are often forced to return the drugs unused due to lack of patient attendance - community members are too scared to enter hospitals to receive advice or treatment although more than 10% of the population are HIV+.
30 high-quality performances will educate over 20,000 people. 15 follow-up days will provide sexual health workshops, peer education, condom demonstrations and mobile VCT to over 250 people a day.
SAFE PWANI will open the door to hospitals and encourage long-term relationships between patients and medical-workers. Lives will be changed by access to ART and the training of HIV counselors will be a permanent contribution to the community.
