Given the fact that the income the women are able to generate from the sale of their crafts is not yet enough to secure their livelihood, we came to the conclusion that the creation of additional sources of income is essential. In early march 2012 it was therefore agreed upon with the women, to bring forward the already planned course in the production of snacks. Originally, it was planned to set up a booth in the vicinity of the accomodations and the arts and crafts studio to be built. Since this project is still lacking the financial means, the women will in the meantime sell their products as "flying saleswomen".
At the same time some of the products will be sold on the sales booth at the crafts market in order to attract additional customers for the purchase of arts and crafts. Also, the women are currently looking for a suitable location for the planned construction of the snack stand.
To date, three séances in the production of snacks have been performed (8, 9 and 12 March 2012). These were organized by an employee of FFA who is well experienced in producing different kinds of snacks. So far, the women were taught the following recipes:
· Mofo boalina
· Mofo akondro
· Mofo Sakay
· Wed Sao
· Nem
· Soupe chinoise
· Pate jaune
The courses took place in a common room on the ground floor of our office which was equipped with the necessary material. To date, the women took part in all séances with great interest. To not forget what they have learned, each woman received a booklet in which the recipes were recorded. After the seances, the products were sold by the women. Every woman received her own representative and hygienic plastic box as well as a pair of tongs. The sale went smoothly, so that the women were able to sell their first products quickly. This had a very motivating effect on the women showing them that producing and selling snacks could actually generate income.
Since then, the women produce different snacks every morning for which they are using the material purchased for the courses. The women have the opportunity to take the material home but depending on the housing situation they prefer to produce the products in the training room. This also has the advantage that an intensive supervision by the FFA instructor is guaranteed. That way she can always intervene and advise the women continuously in regard to hygiene, presentation of goods and also with the management of daily sales.
Afterwards, the products are sold. Among the main customers are the employees of the offices surrounding FFA. By now, they give orders on a regular basis and are being supplied by the women before and during lunchtime. In doing so, each of the women already makes up to 5000 Ariary (appr. 2 USD) benefit per day, whereby they were able to more than double their average daily income from before. Also, one has to bear in mind that the women are at the initial stage of the snack sale and the quantities produced as well as the range of different products have not yet reached the optimum yet.
Due to the success of the first course in the production of snacks, the women have expressed their interest in ongoing courses. In order to expand the range of products and increase future profits, contents of this next course will particularly be the production of sweets, including cakes, puddings and cookies. At the same time, searching for a permanent stall and a suitable location for the production of snacks will continue as the use of the premises of FFA is no long-term alternative.
